Deadpool's Marvel Takeover Continues With HULK-POOL VS RED HULK Brawl

Al Ewing is one of the best writers taking part in Marvel Comics current publishing output. His companion Avengers books take completely opposite tones with surprising characters and team ups, charting new territory in the post-Secret Wars landscape

With the Ultimates and now Ultimates 2, Ewing has teamed with amazing artists like Kenneth Rocafort and Travel Foreman to change the cosmic landscape. America Chavez leads Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, the Blue Marvel, and Black Panther to help Galactus—reborn as the Life Giver, as opposed to the World Eater—as they take on universal threats.

The book managed to get involved with boring and contrived events *cough*CIVIL WAR II*cough* and made the conflicts more nuanced and believable than their main titles. It's a smart superhero comic that takes the Marvel Universe in surprising directions.

And then there's the U.S. Avengers, where people punch bad guys and stuff blows up. It's the flip side to the Ultimates, and it's just as good.

Take the latest issue, for example, where a FrankenHulk Deadpool takes on a Hulked-up handlebar mustache.

The follow-up to Ewing and Pablo Sandoval's New Avengers, the new series sees the former renegade, AIM-sanctioned heroes come under the purview of the U.S. Government. AIM's legitimization as the "science branch" of SHIELD has allowed them to develop a new "Hulk plug-in" in the new series.

Paco Medina came on board—along with Juan Vlasco, Jesus Aburtov, and letterers Chris Eliopoulos and Joe Caramagna—for the new series, the latest of which saw the new Red Hulk try out the Hulk tech once again.

After the super-science creation American Kaiju goes renegade in the fictional country of Lichtenbad, and its creator General Maverick has to bring it in. But when Deadpool is also dispatched and subsequently injected with a new batch of Frankenstein serum, a superpowered clobberknocker breaks out.

The serum is based on the blood of American Kaiju himself, but doesn't affect Deadpool for long. After he attempts to out-Hulk the new Hulk, the two end up teaming up to take down the patriotic Godzilla. The stealth mission doesn't really work out, as most Deadpool team ups rarely go to plan, and DaCosta is left with a very angry Director of SHIELD to contend with.

The entire issue does well with loosely tying into the Monsters Unleashed event while building up Secret Empire without being burdened by too much of Marvel's current shenanigans (Ewing is good at that).

Plus, it's worth the price of admission just to see Medina draw Hulk and a monsterized Deadpool taking on a kaiju. Few artists do epic superhero action as well as Paco Medina.
