Marvel's Agents of SHIELD is concluding its fourth season with a storyline taking place in the artificially created world called the Framework. In this world, each character from the show's core cast has had their history changed. While those changes were supposed to make these characters happier by removing their biggest regret, the result has turned some of the show's most beloved characters into ruthless agents of Hydra.
The most significants example of this is Leopold Fitz (Iain De Caestecker). In the real world, Fitz is a sweet, awkward SHIELD scientist who is completely in love with his best friend, Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). However, in the Framework, Simmons was murdered at the SHIELD academy and Fitz became the Doctor, the second-in-command of Hydra to Ophelia, Madame Hydra herself, which is the Framework persona that rogue life model decoy AIDA (Mallory Jansen) has chosen for himself. Fitz and Ophelia are also romantically involved in the Framework.
As the Doctor, Fitz has proven capable of unspeakable, merciless acts. His favorite hobby is the vicious torture of Inhumans and in the most recent episode of the show, he killed Agnes, the woman that Dr. Holden Radcliffe (John Hannah) modeled AIDA on, and act that Simmons witnessed and was visible horrified by. Following that, Fitz took Radcliffe back to his lab to torture and expressed plans to do the same to his latest captive, Daisy "Skye" Johnson (Chloe Bennet).

With everything that has transpired, and all of the horrible acts that he's done, is there any hope for Fitz's redemption?
"The doctor doesn't see his actions as being out of line," Agents of SHIELD showrunners/executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen tell Entertainment Weekly. "This version of Fitz is clearly capable of horrendous acts, but it is unclear whether not he's capable of remorse."
And that is even assuming that Fitz survives long enough to leave the Framework. The Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) of the Framework, who has only ever known the Doctor and not Fitz, was itching to pull the trigger and take Fitz out for good, and dying in the Framework means dying in the real world. Simmons stopped Ward this time, but will she do the same the next time?
On the next episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, titled "No Regrets," the truth behind Fitz's turn could bring down all of SHIELD.
Agents of SHIELD airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
