Next year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be faced with its biggest hurdle yet. The franchise is slated to debut the first-half of its third Avengers flick next summer, and the monumental event will see dozens of heroes fight back against Thanos, the Mad Titan. The Avengers will team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and more as they try to save not only their planet but the universe as a whole. But, after Avengers 4 finishes up the storyline, the MCU is expected to drastically change.
Recently, the president of Marvel Studios opened up about the franchise's future in an interview with Collider. It was there that Kevin Feige admitted the company's executives have an idea of where the MCU is heading - and it will be in a very different direction.
"We have an idea [of what the MCU looks like post-Infinity War], and it's gonna be very, very different," Feige said.
Right now, Marvel Studios is a little busy working on current projects, so it cannot direct full resources to the MCU's future just yet. Feige stressed the company has eight projects currently in various production stages; Those titles are taking up the bulk of his teams' time.
"We're not actively discussing anything past untitled Avengers, other than we've dated Spider-Man: Homecoming 2—which that would not be the title but that's what we would call it—because that's the agreement we made with Sony for the inclusion of Spidey in the Avengers films, and James Gunn doing a third Guardians of the Galaxy at some point. But really the whole focus of Marvel Studios is, counting Guardians 2, the next eight films that are gonna take up all of our time."
Avengers: Infinity War is described by Marvel Studios as the culmination of everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man in 2008. The movie is filming now under directors Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The expansive confirmed cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bethany, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Josh Brolin as the villain Thanos. Avengers: Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel are filming back-to-back for a May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 release, respectively.
