In 2014, with 44 percent of its audience being women, Guardians of the Galaxy set a new record for percentage of female viewers for a Marvel Studios film. Some of that success can be attributed to the hunky Chris Pratt, but it can also be attributed to James Gunn writing strong and independent female characters like Gamora and Nebula.
Both of them are back for the sequel, but this time, Gunn is delving deeper into the sisters' bristly and hot-tempered relationship. Gunn has also brought in two more strong female characters: Mantis, an antenna-clad alien with empathic, mind-reading abilities, and Ayesha, a the shimmering gold leader of the Sovereign people.
"There are lots and lots of great female characters in the comics that we want to bring to life on the screen, and it's very important to James [Gunn] to include these characters," Marvel boss Kevin Feige said during the film's premiere (via LRM). "And more than just include them, give them their own storylines, and have it be more than just their ability to fight or their romance with a male character. And that's why I think Nebula and Gamora are a high point for the movie, and that relationship is one of the biggest and best arcs in the whole movie, is that sister relationship."
Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, overheard the conversation and added his two cents. "I keep hearing over and over again, women are so happy to see these strong, sexy female characters," he offered. "And trust me, that the men are happy to see them as well."
