At the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy, moviegoers were introduced to the next big star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With a simple jig, fans became obsessed with Baby Groot as the potted sap grooved to the Jackson 5. Later this week, fans in the U.S. will get to reunite with the toddling tree when Guardians of the Galaxy releases its sequel. And, now, the film's cast is stressing none of their characters can compete with Baby Groot's cuteness.
Speaking with Yahoo, stars like Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista explained no one stands a chance against Baby Groot.
Pratt told the site the infant is "completely adorable and really works."
"That was important in the execution of this film, just as it was important for Rocket [Raccoon] to work in the first movie. Because you're giving these emotional lines to an animated character, and it's really difficult sometimes for an animated character to evoke any emotional response from an audience," he continued.
However, Bautista seems a bit more antagonistic about Baby Groot's killer charms. "Whenever you have to compete with cute little Baby Groot — it's like you're pouring your heart out in a scene — and you know this little tree is going to steal the scene," the actor bemoaned.
"It sucks, man… They're not even paying attention [to you]. All they're seeing is Groot's big eyes and his innocent look, and they're like, 'Awww.'"
As for James Gunn, the actor hints that he finds Baby Groot lovable because of his dichotomous personality. "He does have that very strong, super cuteness, super baby feel," the director said before adding a caveat, "Only he kills people."
