What Gunn refers to in his tweet is a previous case where one his own statements to the press resulted in a big misunderstanding.
In the past, Gunn has addressed how his Guardians of the Galaxy films are unconnected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline - a quote that quickly twisted around to suggest that the director saw Guardians as an independent entity, existing outside of the MCU.
Reeves fell into a similar valley of controversy when he said that when he was approached about The Batman, it was as a "standalone. This isn't part of the Extended Universe." The resulting flood of 'The Batman Isn't Part of the DCEU' articles prompted the director to clarify that his Batman film will indeed be included in the main DC Films continuity.
While it's surely annoying as a director to have your every public statement scrutinized and dissected, it is, inevitably, part of the job of helming a major superhero blockbuster film. When making statements to press, exacting wording is key, because like a president, what a director says about a film is taken to be gospel. What's especially ironic about all this is that James Gunn is one of the most prevalent directors when it comes to speaking to press and fans on Facebook chats, etc., often talking in 'off the cuff' fashion about big headline-making subjects - only to then complain when those statements get reported.
The Batman is supposedly going into production sooner before later, but Ben Afflecks's Batman can next be seen in Justice League, which hits theaters on November 17th. Check out our Full Justice League Database Page, below!
