Spider-Man: Homecoming was a bonafide hit with audiences earlier this year, and Kevin Smith has a pretty good idea as to why.

The director and geek culture favorite spoke about Homecoming in a new video on the film's Twitter account. Check it out below.

Smith discussed the film's ability to resonate with audiences, largely due to its new approach to the character's origin story.

"For the first time in Homecoming, you got to see an incarnation presented to you, of a Spider-Man that read like the Spider-Man that you saw in the comics." Smith explained. "Like 'Oh yeah, he's a kid. He's in high school.' The best part of the Spider-Man mythos came when he was still in school."

Smith went on to talk about Spider-Man's iconic origin story, and how it has become universal in the years since the character's debut.

"Spider-Man belongs to all of us, particularly kids, because unlike your other superheroes, it's a boy hero." Smith added. "It's a youngster. It's somebody who shouldn't be involved in the war on crime, but is, for very personal reasons. Spider-Man's secret origin story is mired, of course, in sci-fi, [as] he's bitten by a radioactive spider. But one of his first encounters is with a common thug who steals money, who then winds up killing his uncle."

It's safe to assume that the rest of the featurette will be part of the almost ninty minutes of bonus content on Spide-Man: Homecoming's home release. Homecoming will have its digital version go on sale September 26 before the physical edition hits on October 7. You can pre-order the Blu-ray (currently 41% off) and 4K releases here.
