Tonight's 'The Flash' Has a Weird Tie to 'Ant-Man and the Wasp'

In one of those bits of timing that you just can't plan, fandom is abuzz with talk about the just-released Ant-Man and The Wasp trailer on the same night The CW's hit The Flash will be dealing with a pair of shrinking superheroes of their own.

...Of course, in tonight's "Honey, I Shrunk Team Flash," Elongated Man and Vibe are not shrinking of their own accord, but because a villain shrank them.

He also shrank a building and took it with him -- something that played into the Ant-Man and The Wasp trailer in a way that made it one of the most memorable moments in the whole thing.

This is, of course, not the first time there has been some overlap between the Arrowverse and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition to The Flash debuting right around the same time fans finally got to meet the MCU's Quicksilver, Arrow introduced The Atom while Ant-Man was in production.

While Ant-Man director Peyton Reed told at the time us that he had nothing but positive things to say about the then-nascent Arrowverse, he did not imagine there would be much in the way of overlap.

"I don't really even think about The Atom," Reed told ComicBook.com in 2014. "There's the shrinking stuff, but one of the things I think is different is just the Marvel history of the Hank Pym Ant-Man and the Scott Lang Ant-Man and all the sort of dynamics in that."

The film obviously took advantage of that legacy, with Michael Douglas playing Hank Pym while Paul Rudd played Lang. Pym's daughter helped train his successor, and got her own suit at the end of the film.

"I also like that Scott Lang's a thief, you know? He's an ex-con and that's an interesting twist on it, too," Reed said. "And then the way we're visualizing it, I think, is unlike the way that it's going to be visualized in any other medium."

Some of that visualization -- most notably the fun juxtaposition with popular culture and toys -- creep their way into tonight's episode of The Flash, too.

Ant-Man and the Wasp currently has a 3.96 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Anticipation Rating, making it the fifth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com users.
