Luke Skywalker will be a major focal point of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, specifically what happened in his past to force him into seclusion.
Thanks to Vanity Fair's recent cover story, the cover has been lifted on some of those details. In Star Wars: Episode VIII The Force Awakens, Han tells Rey and Finn "one boy, an apprentice, turned against him, destroyed it all."That, of course, refers to Ben Solo, aka Kylo Ren, who turned away from the light to become a powerful sith. Solo also mentions Luke in that discussion, saying "People that knew him best think he went looking for the first Jedi Temple."
Director Rian Johnson confirms that the place Rey first meets Luke is on Ahch-To, the home planet of the original Jedi temple. Johnson said the set builders "duplicated the beehive-shaped huts where the monks lived on Skellig and made a kind of little Jedi village out of them." Luke has been living here for some time, alongside a new race of creatures. While he wouldn't confirm any details about these creatures, he did say they are "not Ewoks."
It seems Luke's small academy of Jedi's in training was decimated by Ren's betrayal, and afterward, he sought refuge in the place that started it all. Unfortunately, it also seems he hasn't found much hope there, as seen in the trailer when he says "It's time for the Jedi to end."
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017, release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong'o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is slated for release on December 15, 2017. Han Solo: A Star Wars Story hits on May 25, 2018, while Star Wars: Episode IX has a release date of May 24, 2019.
