Transformers Rolls Out To Number 1 In Opening Weekend Box Office

Michael Bay's Transformers: The Last Knight easily took the top spot this weekend, but the victory isn't necessarily as sweet as the studio might prefer.

Transformers has a previously been a juggernaut at the box office, both domestically and internationally. With the Last Knight though, it seems the chinks in the armor are starting to show, as the film brought in $13.8 million on Friday to bring its 3 day total to over $40 million (via Deadline).

That brings the weekend estimate to around $65 million, the lowest opening weekend for any of the previous Transformers films. Even the heavily criticized last entry, Transformers: Age of Extinction, pulled in $100 million in 2014. It might be time for a change in direction, but that doesn't seem likely if the planned spinoffs are any indication.

Warner Bros. continues to reap the rewards from Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, which brought in another $7.3 million on Friday. The movie has also sailed past the $300 million mark domestically and has some other marks in its sights. At this rate, it will surpass the domestic totals for both Suicide Squad ($325.1 million) and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330.3 million).

Wonder Woman still has a fight on its hands to take the number two spot this weekend thanks to Disney's Cars 3. The third entry in the series brought in $7.65 on Friday but is expected to come in slightly lower than Wonder Woman for the weekend.

Rounding out the top 5 this week are two entries from last week, 47 Meters Down and All Eyez On Me. 47 Meters brought in $2.2 on Friday, bringing its 3 day total to $6.9 million. That will keep it above All Eyez On Me, which only hit $1.89 million on Friday and is expected to hit around $5.88 million for the weekend.

The Mummy ($1.7 Friday, $68.5 total), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($1.6 Friday, $160.1 total), Captain Underpants ($1.46 Friday, $66.3 total), Rough Night ($1.58 Friday, $16.7 total), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($876K Friday, $380.2 total) round out the top ten.

Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci will reprise their roles from Transformers: Age of Extinction. Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, and John Turturro reprise their roles for the first three Transformers movies. The film also stars Isabela Moner, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Santiago Cabrera, Liam Garrigan, Jerrod Carmichael, and Mitch Pileggi.

Transformers: The Last Knight's voice cast includes Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, John Goodman as Hound, and John DiMaggio as Crosshairs. Other transformers appearing the film include Bumblebee, Drift, Hot Rod, Cogman, Canopy, Sqweeks, Grimlock, Megatron, Barricade, Onslaught, Hooligan, and Mohawk.
