The Dragon Ball franchise has an ever-growing number of installments. And according to the screenwriter behind many of the franchise's films, there's a good narrative reason why two characters came to the forefront.

Back in 2006, Takao Koyama spoke about Dragon Ball's many films in an interview with Dragonbook. When asked why Gohan and Goten ended up taking over as main protagonists from their dad, Goku, Koyama revealed that it was mainly an issue of maintaining continuity.

"This was an overlap with the original comic." Koyama explained. "In the theatrical features, I had to write stories in this world, but at the time, Goku was dead. We couldn't very well have Goku be dead in the original comic and on TV, but alive in the movies. So, if Goku was in the hereafter, I felt there was no choice but to have Gohan and Goten, who were in this world, do their best."

But that doesn't mean that those films were immune from Goku, with Koyama occasionally throwing in appearances here and there.

"Even so, there would probably be people who wanted to see Goku on the screen." Koyama added. "So, in the spirit of fan service, I'd make just a single shot of a scene in the afterlife."

Thankfully, fans don't have to settle for brief appearances of Goku anymore, with him brought back to life and at the center of Dragon Ball Super. But things aren't looking too great for the hero, judging by a recent spoiler for the upcoming batch of episodes.
