'Thor: Ragnarok' Director Taika Waititi Reveals the Trick He Played on Chris Hemsworth

Thor: Ragnarok is set to be unlike its two predecessors in the Thor franchise. Trailers and promos for the upcoming Marvel film have hinted at a funnier take on the God of Thunder and according to the cast even making the movie was a fun experience. However, it sounds like the fun wasn't limited to the making of the movie. Director Taika Waititi had off-screen pranks as well.

According to a recent profile in the New York Times (via CinemaBlend) Waititi revealed that he liked to mess with Thor: Ragnarok star Chris Hemsworth by pretending that his mike wasn't on and cracking wise about wishing he was working with any other of the Chris' in Hollywood.

"Ah, we should've got the other Chris," Waititi would say knowing Hemsworth could hear him. "Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, anything but Hemsworth."

The plethora of Chris' appearing in Marvel and DC movies is something many fans have made jokes about. Chris Hemsworth is one of three Chris' in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Pratt plays Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy while Chris Evan plays Captain America -- and previously played Johnny Storm/Human Torch in 2005's Fantastic Four as well as its 2007 sequel. On the DC side of things, Chris Pine recently appeared as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman and with there being so many Chris' in the comic movie world, it was an easy joke for Waititi to make.

And according to the profile, Waititi didn't stop there. The director kept the gag going by pretending that he didn't realize his mike was on and would fake apologize to Hemsworth for his comments.

Of course, Waititi's pranks were all good-natured and contributed to an on-set environment so positive that Hemsworth recently revealed to Jimmy Kimmel that made playing Thor enjoyable again after having previously been "bored" with the character.

"Every day was about exploring the unknown and trying something different," Hemsworth said. "I had got pretty bored of myself as that character and so did he, maybe a few people out there, so we thought, 'Let's do something different.' And every day was improvised and a journey into somewhere we hadn't been before."

And if early reviews are to be trusted it sounds like Waititi's joking around and fresh approach to making Thor: Ragnarok may just have paid off. Critics have praised the latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans will get to see for themselves if the film lives up to the hype when Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on November 3.
