Fanboy alert! New trailers for 'Star Trek,' 'Watchmen'

Full disclosure: I'm a "Star Wars" nerd, and not just down to the bone -- it's in my blood. I mean, the infusion of Jedi-vs.-Sithdom reaches microscopic levels for me. Insert midi-chlorians joke here.

I'm up front about my bias because the world is divided into two groups: "Star Wars" fans and "Star Trek" fans, and never the twain shall meet. Don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise. If someone says they like both, they're lying. And it's obvious my particular corner of geekdom, with its $10,000 homemade stormtrooper costumes and backwards Yoda diction, is far superior to those Trekkies over there, with their pointy ears and pocket protectors, jabbering on in Klingon. I mean, really. What dweebs.

But I digress. My assertion that Yoda could slaughter the entire crew of the Enterprise with but one gesticulation will color my commentary of the new trailer for J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" franchise reboot. C-3PO himself calculated the probability of this happening, much faster than that puny-minded Spock ever could. Check out the new clip:

Pros:

The opening. A lonely desert road, a classic Corvette ... not what we expected, huh? By not giving us spaceships and laser -- er, sorry, phaser -- blasts, it keeps us on our toes, and that's a good thing.

Kirk and Spock fighting? In a word: Sweet!

Simon Pegg. His casting as Scotty is perfect. He's one of the funniest actors around right now.

Cons:

Mega-action. You know, "Star Trek" seemed more like an intellectual sci-fi excursion, heavy on character. Diehards may cry foul if Abrams turns it into a high-octane explosion-heavy popcorn flick.

Mega-CGI. Here's hoping Abrams doesn't overdo it with the computer animation. One of the reasons why the original "Star Trek" TV series amuses me (I admit this somewhat begrudgingly) is the cheesy FX.

It's not "Star Wars." Then again, it wouldn't be hard for this to be better than George Lucas' prequels. Even this Yoda-man must admit that.

And then, there are comic-book geeks. They -- OK, we -- got in a lather recently upon the release of the second "Watchmen" trailer:

Pros:

Serious goosebump factor. What is it about Zack Snyder's films, that their trailers can get a person so excited? I mean, this clip is designed to get the blood rushing -- especially for those of us who love Alan Moore's nigh-untouchable graphic novel and recognize the authenticity of the costumes and characters.

A marked improvement upon the previous teaser. We get a better glimpse into the story and a sense of palpable consequence here. This clip also offers great choreography between swelling, dramatic music and the action on screen.

More hope. A lot of people are beefing about how the sprawling, epic "Watchmen" book is impossible to condense and put on the big screen. I know this is just a trailer, but it makes me think Snyder might just pull it off. Then again ...

Cons:

Continued skepticism about the adaptation. You know, it's an unwieldy piece of writing. Also: Never trust a movie trailer.

Who's that narrating? Batman? Admittedly, I'm stealing this observation from a friend, but Rorschach -- the guy in the fedora and black-and-white inkblot facemask -- grumbles like Christian Bale with a sinus infection.

Star Trek looks incredible. I'm still bumming though because it was supposed to come out this December and they pushed it all the way to May/June because they wanted a bigger opening day. Give me a break.

I heard that the date was pushed because of the writers strike. Then again, that's been the catchall excuse lately...

I also think all the Star Trek, 90210 cracks are off base, judging from this trailer.
