Matt Damon Teases Future of Jason Bourne Movies

In hindsight, Matt Damon's return to the Bourne franchise in Jason Bourne came and went with little fanfare or impact. After nearly a decade after The Bourne Ultimatum and that lukewarm spinoff, The Bourne Legacy, Damon and director Paul Greengrass couldn't even match the earnings of Ultimatum, even with inflation and a higher production budget on their side.

Since it was pretty clear that Damon was never in much of a rush to return to the Bourne franchise, it would be easy to assume that the so-so performance of Jason Bourne wouldn't be the best motivator for getting the star back for a quick follow-up. But what does Damon himself have to say on the subject?

THR did an interview with Damon and other filmmakers, and of course the subject of Bourne came up. As you might expect, Damon isn't in any rush to come back for another installment, saying, "Not right now. Those things are a massive undertaking."

As stated, it was obvious before Jason Bourne that Damon wasn't in a rush to return to the franchise; and it seems (reading between the lines) that the fatigue is still there. Of course, in the minds of many fans, having Damon back to lead another Bourne movie may not even be what they want.

After The Bourne Legacy's uncermonious ending, there's still the dangling thread of Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) to tie off. Many fans have also wanted to see Renner's Cross go head-to-head (and eventually team up with) Damon's Bourne. Both options are on the table if the producers want to keep the franchise going sans Damon - or offer him a reduced role commitment, sharing the screentime with Renner.
