Michael Bay Does Not Want To Direct A Marvel Sequel

The promotional campaign for Transformers: The Last Knight officially kicks off with the first trailer for the film, and director Michael Bay is doing the necessary rounds of press to promote, it. Some outlets got to travel to the set of Last Knight over the summer, and brought back quotes that are now making their way online.

One of the most eye grabbing (though ultimately minor) quotes from Bay concerns Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Apparently, Michael Bay feels it would be beneath his talents to direct a Marvel sequel.

...So okay, maybe he didn't put it that way, but that's nonetheless how a lot of Marvel fans (who hate Transformers) are going to see it. What Bay actually said to Collider was "I don't ever wanna take someone like a third of something or second of something. I gotta do my own thing...you talk to Ridley Scott, one our favorite things to do is to create the world. Steven Spielberg, create the world. That is what it's about. If I were to do something I would have to redo it my way."

A lot of fans of classic Transformers cartoons and comic books would agree that Bay definitely made something out of that franchise that is distinctly his - and not like the world and characters they new and loved. Those same fans would probably agree that they want Michael Bay nowhere near a Marvel movie.

However, Bay's imagination seems limited: The Russo Bros. found away to work within the Marvel Studios framework and make Captain America: The Winter Soldier (a sequel) distinctinly their own - definitely a lot different than Captain America: The First Avenger. So there is room for personal touch in a Marvel sequel - and viewers have benefitted from that fact.

But the Russo Bros. are one level of director - Michael Bay is a whole other one. Marvel Studios had issues early on trying to get big-name directors like Kenneth Branagh or Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins to stick to fit the company mold; someone like Bay would likely present an Ego that simply isn't fit for a partnership with Marvel. That's not a slam against Bay: just an inevitability that most fans would see coming a mile away.
