Audiences love to be put under the spell of movie magic while they're sitting in the theaer, watching worlds, characters and creatures come alive onscreen. At the same time, modern audiences are all too aware of visual effects work in movies, with even recent releases like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prompting the debate about whether or not filmmakers' lofty ambitions can be realized with CGI effects.
More often than not, though, visual effects work passes the test of your eye in ways you didn't even realize - case in point: this new gallery of movie images that provide behind-the-scenes insights about how a shot looked before the visual effects were added - versus the what the final shot looked like onscreen.
The movies in the gallery include:
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Marvel's The Avengers
- Captain America: The First Avenger
- Man of Steel
- The Hobbit
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes
- World War Z
- The Walk (2015)
- John Carter
- 300: Rise of an Empire
- Life of Pi
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
- Alice in Wonderland
- Oz the Great and Powerful
- A few Misc. Others
If anything, these shots show just how much imagination actors need, these days. They don't have that much to work with when everything in the room is a blank green slate; the fact that so many of these drab production sets result in such vibrant and memorable visual moments is amazing. Those programmers and coders are the modern movie magicians, for sure.
