One of the more famous horror stories of the 20th century would be "The Monkey's Paw," a cautionary tale about someone who has wishes granted to them through the magic of a sacred item, but each fulfilled wish comes with unintended consequences. Coming later this year, Wish Upon is a reinvention of the classic tale, one which we haven't seen on the big screen in quite some time.
The film's synopsis is as follows:
"Twelve years after discovering her mother's suicide, 17-year-old CLARE SHANNON (Joey King) is bullied in high school, embarrassed by her manic, hoarder father JONATHAN (Ryan Phillippe) and ignored by her longtime crush. All that changes when her father comes home with an old music box whose inscription promises to grant its owner seven wishes.
"While Clare is initially skeptical of this magic box, she can't help but be seduced by its dark powers, and is thrilled as her life radically improves with each wish. Clare finally has the life she's always wanted and everything seems perfect - until the people closest to her begin dying in violent and elaborate ways after each wish. Clare realizes that she must get rid of the box, but finds herself unable and unwilling to part with her new-and-improved life - leading her down a dark and dangerous path."
Although the story might feel familiar or predictable, it looks like director John R. Leonetti is going to put his own look on it. Leonetti previously directed Annabelle, the spin-off from The Conjuring, which was much more effective than it had any reason to be.
The film also has an interesting marketing campaign, so if you head to http://wishuponmovie.com to reveal your deepest, darkest wish. But, as the site warns, be careful what you wish for.
Wish Upon comes out in theaters June 30.
