CBS has released 14 new images from Star Trek: Discovery, the latest small screen revival of the Star Trek franchise.
The images offer Trekkies new looks at the series' core cast of characters, including First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), Lieutenant Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Lieutenant Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif), cadet Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Ambassador Sarek (James Frain), Klingons T'Kuvma (Chris Obi) and L'Rell (Mary Chieffo), and Starfleet Science Officer Lieutenant Saru (Doug Jones), a Kelpien — a new species introduced to the Star Trek franchise.
"Here I am, the first black female lead," Martin-Green said. "We’ve got the first Asian female captain. We’ve got the first woman captain, with a woman first officer… [we've got] the Kelpien — he’s the first of his kind, we’re introducing his species on our show — we’ve got the first openly gay officer in Star Fleet on a Star Trek show. So we’re doing it, we’re continuing [the legacy], and that's how you do it."
Taking place ten years before the original Star Trek television series that starred William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, Discovery "follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself," per the official synopsis.
