Star Wars hype has been been steadily building toward the the upcoming release of the saga's first standalone film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The film takes places before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and chronicles the rebel forces that stole the plans for the Death Star. Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, leads a small group of rebels into the fight of a lifetime, one that impacts the entire galaxy for generations to come.

Thursday afternoon, a new international trailer was released for the film. This Japanese trailer shares a ton of previously unseen footage from the trailer, including a more extended look at the popular villain, Darth Vader.

The video gives fans a deeper look into Jyn Erso's backstory, and shares a critically important moment in the character's history. At one point, the young version of Jyn is given a Kyber crystal. These crystals power the Jedi's lightsabers, as well as the Death Star's laser.

Ben Mendelsohn is also given more screen time in this trailer than in the previous spots. The actor plays the film's major villain, Director Orson Krennic. One scene sees Krennic speaking with Darth Vader, though it's unclear as to how their relationship will unfold throughout the film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
