Fandango, the leading online ticket seller for films, conducted their annual poll of anticipation ratings for 2017, and the top two spots shouldn't be much of a surprise, as Star Wars: Episode VIII reigns supreme, with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the sequel to the quirky fan-favorite cosmic movie in the Marvel Cinematic Unvierse franchise, pulling in second.
Episode VIII continues the story of Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a film that broke over 30 box office records, and it's no shock to see it in the top spot.
Genre entertainment dominates the list, with two films from the MCU, a third Marvel Comics-based movie, and two DC movies upon it. After Guardians vol 2 comes Beauty and the Beast, Disney's live-action reimagining of their animated classic. Wonder Woman, the first big screen adaptation of the character, starring Gal Gadot, comes in fourth, and Spider-Man: Homecoming, the third big screen adaptation of that character, now starring Tom Holland, rounds out the top five.
Justice League, which will bring the DC Films heroes together, starts the bottom five, nudging out The Fate of the Furious, the eighth movie in that franchise. Fifty Shades Darker is the only movie without any action (erm - not that kind of action, obviously) on the list. Logan, Hugh Jackman's final turn as Wolverine, and Despicable Me 3, the only animated movie on the top ten, carry the final two spots.
Notably missing from the list are the other Marvel Studios movie of the year, Thor: Ragnarok, though the Thor franchise has traditionally been the lowest-performing for Marvel Studios, plus Power Rangers, Alien: Covenant, The Dark Tower, and Kingsman 2.
In other categories, the same films mostly dominated, with Emma Watson as Most-Anticipated Actress for 2017, Chris Pratt for most-Anticipated Actor. Rising stars are Gal Gadot and Tom Holland, again showing the draw of those comic book movies, and indeed Wonder Woman is the most-anticipated comic book character of 2017 movies. Pitch Perfect 3 is the top comedy, while Alien: Covenant is the top horror-thriller, giving that film its due.
