The Force is apparently very strong with Lucasfilm's latest release. Earlier this month, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit theaters with a resounding cheer. The sci-fi standalone is the first of its kind and tells the lost story of the group of Rebels who stole plans to the Imperial Death Star. Longtime fans of Star Wars have keenly embraced the blockbuster, and its box-office returns show how popular Rogue One has become. Now, the newest numbers of the movie are in, and they have officially placed Rogue One on a coveted list.
Rogue One has officially raked in more than $375 million at the domestic box-office, making it the third highest-grossing movie in that arena. The film has earned that much money in just 14 days, and it has already overcome box-office returns for films like The Secret Life of Pets, The Jungle Book, and Deadpool. The only films that stand in its way are Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil War as the latter two earned $486 and $408 each.
Internationally, Rogue One is already shaping up for a good New Year's weekend. The movie has already earned $687 million and is expected to break the $700 million mark once 2017 kicks off.
Looking at the domestic box-office, Rogue One has is doing rather well outside of its yearly honor. The film is already amongst the Top 30 highest-grossing domestic films in history as it ranks 29. Its entrance kicked out other lucrative projects like Spider-Man 2 and The Passion of the Christ.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set between the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and shortly before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In the film, resistance fighters embark on a daring mission to steal the Empire's plans for the Death Star.
