Last week, we reported that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, star of Amazon's Fleabag, would be joining the cast of Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (not final title). At the time, we knew only that she'd be playing a character augmented by CGI, speculating that she'd either be some very alien species, like Maz Kanata played by Lupita Nyong'o in the sequel trilogy, or a droid like K-2SO played by Alan Tudyk in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
According to Jeff Sneider of Tracking-Board, it'll be the latter, and Waller-Bridge will be playing a droid. He says her droid will be "the first significantly-featured female droid" in the Star Wars films, in fact.
Droids have had assigned genders for most of Star Wars history, but the female half of that equation has been featured significantly less. While some have appeared on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and even in films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they have not been in major roles, and reportedly this one will be. Purely speculation, but if we had to guess, some sort of assistant droid of the young Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) would make a lot of sense, based on the very limited amount we know about the movie so far.
it is interesting that this will mark the fourth Star Wars film since Disney's purchase, and it will go 4/4 with a CGI character. While Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One both used a CGI character, they did also both focus significantly on motion capture, having the actors actually on set for their scenes, and on mixing practical and digital effects throughout the filming process, and nothing suggests that won't be the case here, as well.
Han Solo: A Star Wars Story is filming now under directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller for a 2018 release (no specific date has been officially announced). Alden Ehrenreich stars as a young Han Solo in the era before Star Wars: A New Hope, before he met Leia and Luke and embarked on a galaxy-saving adventure. Donald Glover also stars as Lando Calrissian, with Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke in as-yet-unrevealed co-starring roles. In addition to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Thandie Newton is in talks for a major role.
