The Star Wars movies and TV shows have always depicted the struggle between Light and Dark forces in the universe, but they’ve maintained an upbeat and optimistic tone throughout their history
Which, if you think about it, is actually pretty surprising considering how much betrayal, mutilation, and death occurs on screen in the Galaxy Far, Far Away.
Despite being somewhat lighthearted fantasy/sci-fi affairs for people of all ages, nearly countless characters have perished in over the course of eight films and two different cartoon series.
YouTube user CT 5555 compiled a long, comprehensive video of every single on-screen death in the Star Wars universe suffered by a named character. That includes every single Saga film from The Phantom Menace all the way through Star Wars: The Force Awakens, including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and every episode of the Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.
And that’s not even including all of the deaths that occurred when planets like Alderaan and Scarif were blown up by the Death Star.
Come to think of it, maybe George Lucas is a nihilist and all of this Jedi/Sith nonsense is just a way for him to examine the inevitable, inescapable demise of every living creature and that we’re only concerning ourselves with petty squabbles as we approach impending doom. Could that be the true, deeper meaning of the Star Wars saga?
