Original 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Filmmakers Liken Their Departure to a Break-Up

After helming the project for months, Solo: A Star Wars Story directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller left the project this summer without the filmmakers or Lucasfilm detailing what led to the departure. This past weekend, the filmmakers opened up about the experience, expressing their admiration for the cast they worked with and their upcoming projects.

"The experience of shooting the movie was wonderful," Lord shared. "We had the most incredible cast and crew and collaborators. I think in terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs. That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big."

Following the initial announcement of the departure, reports began surfacing that the duo's comedic and improvisational filmmaking style departed not only too far off course from the film's intended narrative, but also leaned too heavily into a comedic nature for Lucasfilm's liking. Lord's comments seem to confirm those reports were at least somewhat accurate.

"Sometimes people break up, and it's really sad, and it's really disappointing, but it happens and we learned a lot from our collaborators and we're better filmmakers for it," Lord expressed of the situation. "We're really proud of the work we did on the movie and we wish everybody the best."

Given their work on films like The LEGO Movie and the 21 Jump Street series, fans were thrilled to see their take on the Star Wars smuggler. While fans won't get to see their ultimate vision for the film, the duo teased what we can expect to see next from them.

"We're super well-adjusted, obviously we're doing great. We're super drunk right now," Miller joked. "As Phil said, we had such a great relationship with cast and crew, we were really rooting for them. After we took a much-needed vacation, we got back into it and now we're writing and producing a sequel to The LEGO Movie and producing a Miles Morales animated Spider-Man."

Lord and Miller shared their thoughts at an event celebrating their animated series Clone High, with one of the series' writers and collaborators Bill Lawrence taking the opportunity to share his thoughts on the situation.

"They're really generous and nice," Lawrence said of the duo and joked, "I hope that movie sh*ts the bed."
