Warning: spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead's Season 2 finale follow!

Concluding Fear the Walking Dead's momentus second season, Nick and Luciana found themselves heading north of the United States/Mexico border. However, their train was quickly derailed when men in army gear opened fire on the good people of Tijuana's Colonia.

So, was this the U.S. Army?

The likely answer is, "Yes."

Reflecting on the last time we saw the U.S. Army on Fear the Walking Dead, the soldiers don't exactly have an honorable track record. The government tried to lock down Los Angeles by having the soldiers pose as friends when, really, they were foes with selfish interests in mind during the show's first season. Even after one of the soldiers appeared to be romantically interested in Ofelia, his loyalties remained with the army and he betrayed our group.

The biggest question about this new trigger happy bunch has to be what their motivations are. Clearly, their community is in considerably better shape than most around them. They have gear, guns, ammo, and working helicopters from what we can tell so far. What do they have to hide and why are they so aggressively keeping people out of the United States?

Pairing the knowledge provided on Fear the Walking Dead with glimpses of the army shown on The Walking Dead, there are some major contrasts. The army has clearly posed as foes throughout Fear, restricting our characters and often threatening their lives. In the finale's case, they're outright gunning people down.

On The Walking Dead, the army has never posed such a threat to our survivors. When soldiers encountered the Governor in the third season, they appeared to be welcoming their new acquaintances until they were gunned down by the soldiers of Woodbury. Plus, Abraham Ford is a shining example of former-miltary men becoming valuable leaders in the apocalypse.

Of course, we shouldn't forget the decisions made to drop napalm on Atlanta as seen in flashbacks in the early episodes of the older sibling series, so it hasn't all been good.

If this is indeed the army and not a menacing group who conquered a base and put on their garb, they may not be hiding something so much as they're aggressively protecting their lifestyle. Most survivors are reluctant to let people into their sanctuaries, as shelter is hard to find, so the army may have a strict no entry policy to keep the infected as far away from them as possible.

The world has only ended just a few weeks ago on Fear the Walking Dead. While it fell fast, it's not unlikely that certain factions of the government are still in working order and taking corrupted, selfish orders to preserve their isolated lifestyle.

This group's objective doesn't seem to be shoot to kill, though. Not only did they not finish the job on Luciana and Nick after having them in a submissive position to round out the episode but they also shot at Ofelia's feet and captured her rather than executing her. Maybe former Ecuadorian soldier, Daniel, is waiting for his daughter in their fortress?
