During Rick's march on Negan's Sanctuary in the Season 8 premiere of The Walking Dead, an unforgettable twist from the show's source material was realized in live-action.

Before Season 7 came to an end, many fans of The Walking Dead saw the stage being set for Gregory to betray Rick's group. Still, the suspicions didn't make the moment any easier to swallow. As Rick's group finally appeared to have an upper hand on Negan and the Saviors, the villain pulled out what he expected to be a secret weapon in the Hilltop's leader.

Gregory walked out of the Sanctuary doors.

The cowardly Hilltop leader ordered the people of The Hilltop to stand down, claiming his group is with Negan and the Saviors, not Rick. If they would turn around and go home, their families would be spared. If they didn't, they would have no home to return to.

"The Hilltop stands with Negan and the Saviors," Gregory told Rick's army. Very few words were change, including all of Negan's requests for more from Gregory, and the message remained exactly the same. It's a moment from The Walking Dead issue #115.

If you thought that Gregory's decision was going to turn the tide of the war, you were sorely mistaken.

Jesus spoke loudly, yelling back at Gregory, for one of the episode's proudest moments. Without hesitating, he voiced the feelings of everyone from his community: "The Hilltop stands with Maggie!"

So, like Eugene, Gregory has now taken up arms with Negan. It may have been a more temporary switch, however, seeing as he was tossed from the balcony and rescued by Father Gabriel before the attack was over.

The Walking Dead airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
