WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR MONDAY'S EPISODE OF BATES MOTEL!

When Bates Motel began airing on A&E five years ago, horror fans were instantly attracted. The prospect of seeing Norman Bates progress into his classic Psycho character was one that wouldn't be missed, and the show has definitely delivered on its promise to give him an eerie backstory.

With the series coming to a close, Bates Motel has finally caught up to its predecessor. Marion - played by Rihanna - has finally checked in, and everyone has been anticipating that infamous shower scene.

The scene in question - where Norman Bates kills Marion in the shower - is one of the most iconic in horror history. Everyone recognizes the scream, the knife, and the creepy music screeching in the background.

Monday night's episode included the iconic scene, but gave it a very unexpected twist.

If you've been watching the series, you'll know the name Sam Loomis. The local man has been having an affair with Marion for some time now, and the conflict has put him at odds with Norman.

As Norman began to watch Marion undress through a peephole, the scene from Psycho began to unfold. However, when he actually showed up to the shower - with his knife in hand - it was Sam he found bathing.

Norman stabbed Sam repeatedly, in what was almost a shot-for-shot remake of the original scene. As Sam - played by Austin Nichols - fell to his death, he tore the shower curtain down with him. It was a great homage to Psycho, just not in the way fans were expecting.

One fan cut together the scenes from last night's episode, and played them side-by-side with the original Psycho scene. From a purely technical perspective, it's pretty spot-on. You can check out the full video above.

As for Austin Nichols, his characters can't really catch a break. This surprise twist comes a couple of months after Spencer - his character on The Walking Dead - was brutally gutted by Negan.

Be sure to stay tuned to Bates Motel every Monday night, as the series wraps up its final season.
