Spoilers for tonight's episode of Riverdale below!
Tonight's episode of Riverdale shoved the students - and some of the parents - of Riverdale High into a new, but entirely familiar situation. While celebrating Jughead's (Cole Sprouse) birthday, the party quickly got out of hand, thanks to the help of Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) and Chuck (Jordan Calloway).
Although many of the guests enjoyed the party, the guest of honor was a little anxious about the whole affair, beginning when Betty (Lili Reinhart) surprised him with an initially-intimate party.
While Jughead briefly mentioned his hesitancy towards celebrating his birthday - saying that it brings back memories of his family - it appears that his feelings stem from something a little more complex.
During a recent set visit, Cole Sprouse addressed why exactly his character didn't like his birthday - even before the punches were thrown and secrets were revealed.
"I think just because attention is all on him." Sprouse explained. "I think there are probably some deeper underlying psychologies. But I think he's one of those characters that's a little bit vain, and considers himself, honestly, to be better than the people he surrounds himself with."
According to Sprouse, much of this is rooted in Jughead not feeling like a normal high schooler, something he reiterated to Betty later in the episode.
"And think, when he's sort of thrust into this super normal, kind of conformist idea of an American party, that complicates a lot of that. I also think he's an introvert, so he's nervous around large groups of people. And I think the attention being all on him is something that he would have a distaste for."
When Fred (Luke Perry) decides to finalize the divorce with Archie's mother Mary (guest star Molly Ringwald), Archie (KJ Apa) hides his true feelings. Archie tries to win Valerie (guest star Hayley Law) back with a romantic evening, however, Betty (Lili Reinhart) hijacks his plans when she decides to throw Jughead (Cole Sprouse) a surprise birthday party. Once Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) learns of the party, she decides to make it interesting and things quickly get out of control. Meanwhile, Veronica (Camila Mendes) contemplates whether she should participate in the deposition to help get her Dad released. Madchen Amick and Marishol Nichols also star.
Dawn Wilkinson directed the episode written by Britta Lundin & Brian E. Paterson.
Riverdale stars KJ Apa as Archie, Cole Sprouse as Jughead, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camilla Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Luke Perry as Archie's father Fred Andrews, among others. The series' showrunner is Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Archie Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer and the writer of Afterlife With Archie, the publisher's wildly popular zombie series.
