In February, former Agents of SHIELD actor Bill Paxton passed away at age 61. When Agents of SHIELD returned from a mid-season hiatus, the show memorialized Paxton at the end of its return episode.
Paxton's image made another appearance in Agents of SHIELD in the episode titled "All The Madame's Men." For those unfamiliar with Paxton's Agents of SHIELD character, he played Agent John Garrett of SHIELD who was secretly a mole for the Hydra terrorist organization.
In the real world of Agents of SHIELD, Garrett died at the end of the show's first season. However, Agents of SHIELD is currently in the midst of a story arc in which the show's heroes are trapped in an alternate universe where Hydra won the war against SHIELD.
A significant portion of "All the Madame's Men" took place in a television news studio for a Hydra propagandist. In the opening scene of the episode, as the anchor, Sunil Bakshi, is preparing to go on the air, the camera pans past a series of monitors. On some of those monitors is an in memorium frame for Garrett (Paxton's) profile and the words on the screen hail Garret as an "American hero."
It's unclear if this callback to the first season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD was planned before Paxton's death. Garrett is a significant figure in the plot of "All the Madame's Men" because it deals with why his protege, Grant Ward, is such a different person in the Framework, so using that moment as a reminder of who Garrett was would make sense. That, out of context, the frame also appears to be calling Bill Paxton an American hero could be intentional, or it could be a happy accident.
Marvel's Agents of SHIELD airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
Marvel's Agents of SHIELD returns with a vengeance for the fourth exciting season in an all new time period, Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. ET. In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they've ever faced – an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward. The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman, Lincoln Campbell.
