Super Sentai Trademark Reveals A Two-Team Season

It looks like Super Sentai fans will get two teams for the price of one in 2018 if Toei's latest trademark holds up.

Toei officially filed a trademark for the 2018 season of Super Sentai, which is the Japanese property that the American Power Rangers franchise originates from. It seems that the company is pitting one Sentai team against another in a cops and robbers-themed season titled Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger and Kaito Sentai Lupinranger.

Having two teams face off against one another is a novel concept, and one many didn't expect. The law enforcement angle hasn't been done since Season 28's Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger. In that series, the Rangers fought criminals of alien origin though, and here it will probably be another human group of thieves.

Fans are pretty excited to see two teams face off in one season, though there is a chance that the titles could be separate, resulting in two different seasons. Hopefully, fans will find out later this year, or even at next year's Power Morphicon, though news will likely break much sooner than that.

This is the 42nd overall season of Super Sentai and follows Season 40's Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger, which centered around an animal theme with elements that have been compared to the hit video game Minecraft. Many expect this will be the next season of Saban's Power Rangers as well, after next year's Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel, which is based off the Shuriken Sentai Ninninger series (Season 39 of Super Sentai).

Season 41, titled Uchu Sentai Kyuranger, is the current series of Super Sentai, which revolves around a space theme and includes a team made up of nine Rangers. No telling if that one will make its way over stateside, but that is a likely bet.

You might notice there are only 24 seasons of Power Rangers while there are 41 of Super Sentai. That's because Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is actually based on the 16th season of Super Sentai, titled Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger. Saban would then adapt new seasons as they aired, though it did skip Season 38's Ressha Sentai ToQger. That was mostly due to the season's train theme, which isn't as big of a pull in the United States.
