Marvel's Agents of SHIELD will take its characters to the cosmos in its fifth season, and it sounds like it'll be quite an interesting ride.

During a round-table at New York Comic Con (via ScreenRant), Clark Gregg spoke about SHIELD's new frontier. While it might not employ as many traditional science fiction tropes, Gregg says it will serve as a natural link to the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's films.

"I grew up watching those shows – Star Trek, those things." Gregg explained. "I wouldn't say that [season 5] is like that, but to have it really bridge into more the sci-fi, cosmic part of the Marvel [Cinematic] Universe in ways that will be surprising to people, it's really thrilling."

As SHIELD fans will remember, season four ended on a pretty surprising note, with Gregg's character Phil Coulson seeming to be trapped in a prison cell on a space vessel. The finale raised plenty of questions, from potential references to SWORD and Avengers: Infinity War to a surprising possible comic link for Coulson.

And judging by Gregg's comments, it sounds like SHIELD's fifth season will go above and beyond to answer them - and provide some fun cosmic ties along the way. Hopefully with films like Thor: Ragnarok and the aforementioned Infinity War on the horizon, those connections will be some pretty awesome Easter eggs.

While SHIELD's return might be a ways away, fans have plenty of new teases to look forward to. In addition to several new posters, the first twenty minutes of the season five premiere screened at NYCC. And SHIELD could still be having an effect on the MCU while on hiatus, judging by one theory about its sister show, Inhumans.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD will return on December 1st, following the conclusion of Marvel's Inhumans.
