S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Leo Fitz will make his first appearance in Marvel Comics in December -- but will he have a secondary identity?

A new teaser image released to social media by ABC suggests that the character's evolution may change him into something new when the series returns later this month.

At the end of last season, Fitz was left in a catatonic state after he sacrificed his own safety to save Jemma Simmons's life while they were trapped at the bottom of the ocean in a capsule that only had the life support to save one. She dragged him to the surface with her and the two were rescued by Nick Fury, but Fitz had still not woke up at the end of the season.

So...what will he become?

Of course, the obvious question here is whether they will turn Fitz into a Marvel superhero. They did, after all, do that with Mike Peterson in the first season when he was nearly killed and instead brought back as Deathlok. Obviously, this image doesn't outright say that, but just asking "what will he become?" is bound to get the fans wondering.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC on September 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
