Despite an extremely limited release and threats from North Korean hackers, Sony's The Interview still scored $1 million at the box office on Christmas Day.
After saying that it wouldn't release the film at all, Sony made a last-minute decision to distribute the film to less than 10% of planned movie theaters yesterday, and made the film available for digital viewing on Christmas Eve.
"Considering the incredibly challenging circumstances, we are extremely grateful to the people all over the country who came out to experience 'The Interview' on the first day of its unconventional release," Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures, said in a statement on Friday morning.
The Interview, the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy about an assassination plot against North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, sparked the ire of North Korean hackers who leaked hundreds of the studios' private emails and threatened mortal danger to anyone planning on seeing the film Christmas Day.
While The Interview is still only available in a limited number of theaters, viewers can download it now on YouTube, Google Play, X-Box Video, and seetheinterview.com for $5.99.
