Chappie didn't light the North American box office on fire this weekend, but did come out on top. Sony Pictures Entertainment's R-rated film, which stars Hugh Jackman ("The Wolverine") and Sharlto Copley ("Powers"), will finish the weekend with $13.3M, which is $5M short of expectations.

The overall box office could only muster $88.5M. The last time the box office came in under $100M was the weekend of Dec. 12-14. The box office numbers were off 17% from last weekend's total and an astonishing 39% from last year's total during the same time frame.

Meanwhile, the comic book movie Kingsman: The Secret Service, which was directed by Matthew Vaughn ("Kick-Ass") and stars Colin Firth ("The King's Speech"), is nearing the $100M benchmark. In its fourth week of release it now has a domestic total of $98M.
