The Flash Movie Will Use Barry Allen; Animated Spider-Man Movie Will Be Different

Phil Lord, one part of the Lord and Miller (Chris) creative team that directed The Lego Movie and the two Jump Street films, participated in the latest Hippojuice podcast. There, he discussed two upcoming superhero projects he and Miller are working on: An animated Spider-Man film for Sony and a live-action The Flash movie for Warner Brothers.

A movie about The Flash will be a bit tricky for a number of reasons. The most obvious is that there is currently a popular television series based on the character, but WB has already hired their star (Ezra Miller) and penciled in a released date (March 23, 2018). Lord and Miller are developing the story, with a chance that they will direct it. Lord acknowledges that Grant Gustin is already making a name for himself as Barry Allen/The Flash but won't let that keep them from using Barry in their solo film.

"We're trying to break a story. It's interesting, because there's a really popular TV show out there, and we're trying to carve out space for the movie that's apart from that. I think we're doing alright. … I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen," Lord revealed. "It's going to be it's own [thing, apart from the TV show] — we're more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… it really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie. We're just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it's kind of a different take on superhero stuff."

Besides working on The Flash movie, Lord and Miller are developing an animated feature film for Spider-Man. That's a lot on their plate, can they handle it? "We're sort of juggling superheroes with the color red in them, that's all we do," Lord said. "We're trying not to confuse their powers or anything, but it does get tricky. But it's the same thing, is there a way to do one of these movies in a new way? That's the exciting thing about it being animated, is it opens up a lot of different possibilities."

Lord added, "They're part of these huge franchises, but kind of are off a little bit to the side, and that gives us a lot of creative freedom, and that's the thing we love. Hopefully we won't waste that!"
