William Hurt To Be "New Version" Of General Ross In Captain America: Civil War

When Marvel officially announced the cast of Captain America: Civil War there were a few surprises, but none bigger than William Hurt reprising his role as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Last time we saw the General, he was drinking his sorrows away in The Incredible Hulk (2008) post-credits scene. That's when Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) approached him about putting together The Avengers. You couldn't blame most fans for thinking that film had been swept under Marvel's rug.

Ross is coming back to the MCU, but William Hurt promises that it will be different from the last time we saw him. Hmmph. "I loved playing Ross the first time because I was able to try and create an ego as big as the monster he was chasing. And one that was as warped too," Hurt told IGN while promoting his new show Humans. "It's a more modernized style. And what they've done is they've taken a character who was the Ross from the older film and made a new version. This is a much newer Ross. A much different Ross. And I liked that a lot. I haven't had a lot of time to understand it, but I'm doing the best I can. And they haven't fired me yet."

Marvel "made a new version" of General Ross? What's that mean? Rumor has it, General Ross will become Red Hulk (aka Rulk) in the film. In the comics, he became the Red Goliath in 2008 through a Super Soldier program run by Doc Samson and MODOK's Intelligencia. Could something like that happen in the MCU? Maybe!

Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters May 6, 2016.
