Jason Mitchell is in negotiations to join Legendary and Universal's Kong: Skull Island, according to Variety.

Mitchell has earning praise for his performance as rapper Eazy-E in the NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton. When he signs on he'll join a cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Tobey Kebell and his Straight Outta Compton co-star Corey Hawkins (he portrayed Dr. Dre).

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is directing from a script written by John Gatins and Max Borenstein, and currently going through last-minute polish by screenwriter Derek Connolly. Filming will begin in late-October and take place in Hawaii.

Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary's story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline.

Kong: Skull Island will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on March 10, 2017.
