After rumors hit and an official announcement dropped during Disney's D23 Expo, Colin Trevorrow has tweeted out that he's getting started on Star Wars Episode IX, the final part of a new trilogy that kicks off in December's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The director will follow Rian Johnson on Episode VIII and J.J. Abrams on The Force Awakens.

In the tweet, Trevorrow made a play on the season, saying, "Back to school. #IX" and including an image of a Lucasfilm, LTD moleskine notebook.

It's the first time since the announcement that the director has acknowledged his new gig on twitter, though more is likely to come when we're closer to the film's active production and development - after all, it's not due to come out for another four and a half years (assuming they keep the final weekend of May release schedule that starts with Episode VIII in May 2017).

Johnson is also writing VIII and writing a treatment for IX, likely to help the continuity between the films stay tight. No screenwriter has been officially announced for Trevorrow's film, but it should be noted that he tends to at least contribute to the scripts of the movies he directs, including his blockbuster success Jurassic World.

Star Wars Episode IX is due in theaters 2019 with no firm release date yet announced. See where the other Star Wars films, including both episodes and "Story" films fall on our full franchise movie release schedule.
