The dark, post-apocalyptic, burning Los Angeles cityscape takes the screen. Zombies hit the doors the arena. Fear The Walking Dead credits roll.
Madison prepares boxes of supplies with Travis. They inform Chris and Alicia they have to leave. That's why the soldiers are retreating. Chris is concerned for his mom, Liza. He's questioning Travis about how they'll get her back.
Travis, Madison and Daniel interrogate their captive soldier. He explains to them how difficult it will be to rescue their families without him. Madison tells Travis he can bring the soldier in his truck.
Ofelia backs her bags. Daniel assures her they'll find her mother, Griselda. She questions what they'll do with Andy (the soldier) and accuses Daniel of lying. Daniel claims he was protecting her.
Madison reminisces on height markings on the wall in her house before meeting Alicia and Chris at the car. Ofelia follows. A neighbor walks their dog and Madison feels bad about them being unaware of what is coming.
Dr. Exner tries to contact someone over the radio for transport. They're going to move to the Air Force base. Liza questions what will happen to her family and Dr. Exner says she'll have to be selective, Chris's father can come but he'll want his girlfriend and his girlfriend will want her kids.
Travis escorts a cuffed Andy to the truck. Andy begs to be cut loose but Travis wants him to take him to their family. Andy continues reasoning with Travis and seems to be persuading him. The three cars, driven by Madison, Ofelia, and Travis, pull out of the driveway and leave. Daniel opens the gate for them to pass through.
The soldiers watch them leave and say there are no superiors left. Daniel suggests the soldiers save their ammunition as a horde of zombies follows him. The soldiers open fire on the horde.
Daniel and Travis argue about doing the right thing. Chris wants to tag along with his dad but Travis wants to leave him behind for safety. Madison tells Chris to take care of Alicia before she, Daniel, and Travis head out.
Upstairs, there are dozens of people in chain link-walled holding cells, in various degrees of impatience. Strand tells Nick to picture himself somewhere else, with a needle in his arm. He asks where Nick's home is, and when Nick tells him, he tells Nick a little bit about El Sereno.
The lights go down and there's panic. The man tells Nick it's time to go, and Nick wants to know where they're going. The man reaches in his pocket for the key and can't find it, but Nick produces it, having picked his pocket.
Topside, there are people on the roof watching military choppers. On the ground outside there's a zombie outbreak; the nurses realize that now, not only is the compound compromised, but their evac knows it.
On her way past the fence, Madison sees a crowd of walkers being led in and is shocked. They cut their way through the fence and into the compound.
A nurse radios for help, saying there's time to extract them if they go now, but the choppers say they're assessing the situation and they leave. The charge nurse tells people to go, that transports are downstairs, and tells Liza she will stay behind. She tells her that if nobody has gone to rescue Chris yet, they never will. Liza leaves and the other nurse looks over a room full of critical patients.
In the garage, Chris says "this is crazy," and gets out of the car. Alicia says they'll come back, but Chris says he doesn't want anyone to die. The two bicker a bit, but it's cut off by the sounds of violence above them. Alicia tells him they can't save everyone, and he tells her to shut up -- at first it seems like they're just arguing, but then there's motion nearby and Chris tells her to get in the car.
Back at the holding area, Strand and Nick start working their way outside, ignoring others' pleas for help. The man tells Nick they're going to look for somebody called Abigail.
Back in the car, the kids are wondering about whether the undead would be interested in them at all, or would keep moving past. A couple of military men break the windows and grab them, though, before being joined by a third. The men want the car keys, which Chris refuses to give them, but when they start to get rough, Alicia gives them up. When they get handsy with her, though, Chris tries to tackle them and they knock him out.
Inside the building, alarms are going off as the parents and a few other survivors are exploring the interior looking for Nick. Soldiers are holding off a horde of the undead while both they and the nurses try to escape in evac shuttles. A guard tower falls, creating a point of penetration through which a giant horde starts to descend on the building. Inside, Nick and Strand find a dying soldier and steal some of his effects. Unfortunately, this man was supposed to be their ride.
Entering the holding area, Travis and Madison learn that her son is gone but stop to free those in custody.
Nick and Strand are pinned against a door, while Travis and Madison are on the other side. The undead descend upon them, and ultimately Liza comes to get the door open -- just in time to save the pair but also free a number of the undead to roam more parts of the compound.
In the kitchen, Liza is attacked by a walker. The survivors manage to kill it and a number of others before she can be infected, but another attacks Madison. Nick manages to save her at the last second, and then the group has to run for help.
Daniel asks where his wife is, and Liza has to tell him that the infection took her, and there's "nothing left to see." Her family is horrified by this.
The family and Strand come to the urgent care area, where they ask the charge nurse for help. She asks where they think they can go, but ultimately says that if they escape through the Intensive Care Unit, they can exit through a sublevel and get outside, but there's nowhere to go. Liza tells her to come with them, but she stays behind to sacrifice herself, Madison saying that she's lost.
As they're preparing to leave, Strand tells Madison that they should go west; he has a home on the water, and is "prepared."
Outside the hospital, the group passes a massive pile of burned bodies and ashes. In particular Ofelia and Daniel are upset by the realization that their mother is likely among the dead. Ofelia begins to sob.
The survivors arrive in the garage to find the car gone and the kids explaining what happened. While they enjoy being reunited, Andy comes and points a gun at Daniel. Ofelia tries to calm him, but he isn't interested in hearing it. When he shoots Ofelia, Travis tackles him and beats him mercilessly until Madison comes to make him stop.
On the road in a pair of trucks, the group heads West, passing the undead on mostly-empty streets. Strand tells them not to go downtown, as it will be too dangerous. When Madison asks if he wants to go back he says "You're funny. We're going to get along fine next month." He instructs her on a back route through outer neighborhoods and the aqueduct area seen in the final scenes of the first episode. Eventually, they arrive at Strand's palatial home, where he has fences, generators and cars. He leads the group indoors (you can now see that Ofelia was shot only in the arm) and tells them to help themselves to food.
Nick stands in a doorway and looks out at the ocean; Madison comes and apologizes to him for letting them take him. He scoffs, and the two talk about how strange the world has become. Nick says he never knew where he was going, and that he's been living the apocalypse for a long time. Now, he says, everyone is catching up with him.
After Liza nurses Ofelia a little bit, she tells Chris that she's going to be okay and they hug. Nick goes to ask Strand what he's doing; the man is packing. He says that he has to stay in constant motion. He says no, nothing stays, when Nick asks if the rest of them can stay.
Outside, Madison is walking through the yard. Inside, Nick asks where Abigail is. Strand says "not here," and Nick asks why they came, then. Strand motions him outside, where they pair look through a giant pair of binoculars, where it's revealed Abigail is a yacht on the water.
Madison follows Liza out to the beach, asking what's wrong; Liza shows her an injury she sustained with the zombies. She takes out a gun, and asks Madison to kill her, and not to make Travis do it. Madison agrees, but Travis comes and tells her that he's not going to let her do this. She tells him that the infection isn't treatable, and that no matter how you die, you come back. She makes Travis promise to protect their son and the two cry together. He reaches out to Madison to take the gun.
While Chris and Alicia are eating popsicles on the porch, a shot rings out. They run to see what happened, and find the body while Travis is collapsed on the beach, crying. Chris cries over his mother. Madison goes to console Travis while the tide rolls in. The pair kneel there, crying and hugging.
