The Cleveland Downtown/Flats Design Review Committee has approved proposal for a Superman monument, to be displayed on the city's lakefront, designed by artist David Deming.

Deming's design is for a 36-foot-high sculpture of Superman, set atop a tapering pylon.

The monument is intended as a celebration of Cleveland as the "birthplace" of Superman. Cleveland was the home of Jerry Siegal and Joe Shuster when they conceived of the character in 1933. The monument would also feature sculptures of the creators, along with Joanne Shuster, Joe's wife, who was the model for Lois Lane.

The monument is estimated to cost upward of $3 million, and is being privately funded.
