For the last month and a half, Japanese Pokemon fans have been voting in a special "general election" to determine the country's favorite Pokemon. All 720 Pokemon were eligible for votes, and the winning Pokemon would be distributed at screenings of the upcoming Volcanion and the Exquisite Magearna movie out later tis summer. ComicBook.com previously reported that Greninja, the final evolution of Pokemon X/Y starter Froakie, had emerged as a surprising frontrunner over perennial favorites like Pikachu and Charizard. Earlier today, the Pokemon Company announced the final results of the election and Greninja came out on top, with over 36,000 votes of a possible 562,400.

In hindsight, it shouldn't be too surprising that Greninja won the election, as the Pokemon was featured in the latest Super Smash Bros game and is arguably the star of the current season of the Pokemon anime.

Coming in second place was Arceus, the "creator" of the Pokemon universe. In third place was Mew, the first mythical Pokemon ever introduced in the games. Pikachu, the face of the Pokemon franchise, finished in fourth place (which could indicate a case of voter burnout) and rounding out the top five was Sylveon, an Eevee evolution. Rounding out the top ten were a mix of Legendary Pokemon (Rayquaza, Zygarde), mythical Pokemon (Genesect and Meloetta) and Charizard.

Coincidentally, the election also revealed which Pokemon was the least popular. Coming in last place was Simisear, a Fire Type Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Black and White.
