In light of the recent shooting in Orlando, billionaire Mark Cuban donated $1 million to assist the Dallas Police with "enhanced counterterrorism efforts." The shooting took place at an Orlando gay nightclub leaving 49 dead, and more than 53 wounded. The tragedy was the deadliest shooting in U.S. history.

Dallas Police Department chief, David Brown stated, "These funds will be used primarily to protect the LGBT community. We will earmark and track the expenditure of these funds to ensure its effective use in creating a safe environment."

WFAA reports that the Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban contacted Mayor Mike Rawlings Tuesday night, and the plans for the usage of the funds were laid out Wednesday morning. The funds will be used for "16,000 hours of overtime for the Dallas Police Department, including an increased presence in Oak Lawn."

Oak Lawn is the Dallas area most popular with the city's LGBT community.

At a City Hall meeting on Wednesday, Mayor Rawlings stated, "[Cuban] wants to do this, not only to help, but to say to other people, 'come with me and help'. So I can call other philanthropists that want to help in this effort, we can deal with this issue that we're facing."

Other companies such as Disney, and Alaska Airlines have made similar contributions in the wake of the mass shooting. Disney donated $1 million dollars to OneOrlando, a non-profit organization helping the victim's families, while Alaska Airlines is offering free flights to the families of the victims.
