Most of the time when aliens arrive on Earth, they are hostile, killing people like ants and destroying major cities -- especially the landmarks. However, in the upcoming sci-fi film Arrival, the biggest obstacle will be communicating with the newly arrived aliens, so the people of Earth can determine what their intentions are.

To help decipher an extraterrestrial language, the government brings in Louise Banks (Amy Adams), an expert linguist. "This isn't a graphic-novel universe or creating a new universe. This happens in our world today, as it exists," Adams told USA Today. "Not having to transport myself to a universe where superheroes exist, which is also fun, really helped me ground the character and the experience."

Before the aliens show up, Banks is already going through some turmoil in her life, and that will come into play while she is working on bridging the communication gap. "She felt real, like somebody I would know and somebody I would like to have a conversation with," Adams said. "Emotionally, the journey she takes in this was devastating to me."

She adds, "You can tell she's been down this road before in helping out the government and it's turned out poorly."

Over the decades, scientists have theorized that mathematics will probably be the best way to communicate with aliens, so it makes sense that the government also brings in physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) to offer a mathematical point of view. "I haven't played a smart nerdy guy," Renner said. "I thought there was a great challenge in that."

Below, check out two stills from the film. The first one, with Adams, shows one of the dozen alien pods that come into our atmosphere and hover mysteriously near the ground. The other features Renner looking in awe at one of the alien pods.

Arrival is centered on the landing of alien crafts around the world, and the expert linguist (Amy Adams), who is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.

The cast features Amy Adams (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) as Dr. Louise Banks, Jeremy Renner (Captain America: Civil War) as Ian Donnelly, Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Colonel Weber, Michael Stuhlbarg (Men in Black 3) as Agent Halpern, Tzi Ma (Rush Hour) as General Shang, and Mark O'Brien ("Republic of Doyle") as Captain Marks.

The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve ("Sicario," "Prisoners") and based on "Stories of Your Life and Others," a short story by Nebula and Hugo Award-winning author Ted Chiang.

Arrival will arrive in theaters November 11th!
