In 2014, after taking a 12-year absence and seeing the Gareth Edwards-directed Godzilla film reel in a whopping half a billion at the worldwide box office, Toho decided to dust off their Godzilla film franchise. Two years later, Toho has released Shin Godzilla (also known as Godzilla Resurgence) and, so far, it's been a success. In its first two weeks of release, the film has held the top spot at the Japan box office, grossing $29.7 million (¥3.07 Billion).

The key to its success is how well it takes the classical elements of the King of the Monsters and improves upon them with modern-day technology, such as Godzilla's atomic breath (a.k.a. nuclear breath). Check out the clip above, showing Godzilla devastating a large portion of Tokyo with a neon-blue beam of radiation.

Shin Godzilla is a Japanese tokusatsu kaiju film – a live action science fiction monster movie featuring special effects. It is the 29th Godzilla film produced by Toho. The film is co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. Both directors performed double duties as writer and visual effects director respectively. Higuchi most recently directed the live action film adaption of "Attack on Titan" ("Shingeki no Kyojin") which was released in 2015. "SHIN GODZILLA" stars Hiroki Hasegawa and Satomi Ishihara – both alums of the "Attack on Titan" movie – and Yutaka Takenouchi.

Shin Godzilla opened in Japan on July 29.
