On this day 12 years ago, Parenthood actor Dax Shepard made the life-altering decision to become sober. The 41-year-old actor tweeted out a heartwarming message to commemorate the special occasion.

The tweet read: "12 years ago today I came out of my last toxic, life threatening stupor. I now have a wife & babies & some self-esteem #gratitude #promises"

Shepard, who is married to Forgetting Sarah Marshall actress Kristen Bell, seems to be in a much better place, and we couldn't be happier for him.

However, achieving sobriety was no simple task for Shepard. In 2012, he told Playboy magazine that he was consuming any kinds of drugs he could get his hands on. "I just loved to get f***ed up - drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, everything," he stated.

"Mostly my love was Jack Daniel's and cocaine," he continued. "I lived for going down the rabbit hole of meeting weird people. Of course, come Monday I would be tallying up all the different situations, and each one was progressively more dangerous. I got lucky in that I didn't go to jail."

While Shepard may not have had to go to jail, he didn't come out of his drug-using days unscathed. "My nose is completely sideways from a drunken altercation," he explained. "I'm missing a knuckle because of a drunken altercation. Somehow I was usually able to get sober for work. "

Shepard's wife, Kristen Bell, has mentioned that walking through the experience of getting sober has made her realize the severity of the struggle. "Seeing the world through his eyes has really opened mine to knowing that it is a disease and nobody is choosing to drink more than others, they are doing it because of a variety of reasons and they deserve the attention of a mental health professional, and not the county jail or however else we're choosing to pretend we're fixing the problem," Bell stated to E! News.

Three years after meeting one another in 2007, Shepard and Bell wed in 2010. Getting sober and being married to Kristen Bell has made an extremely significant difference on Shepard's life.
