As the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange has an arsenal of various magical tools and instruments at his disposal. But none are more iconic or powerful as the Eye of Agamotto, a powerful amulet worn by Strange and used to reveal hidden truths and aid Strange with his most powerful and dangerous spells.

The upcoming Doctor Strange movie will feature a new version of the Eye of Agamotto, designed and built by a team led by prop master Barry Gibbs.

Gibbs has worked on Marvel movies dating back to Captain America: The First Avenger, and ComicBook.com had an opportunity to speak to him about crafting the iconic amulet.

"[The Eye of Agamotto] was clearly the most iconic prop for this film," Gibbs told ComicBook.com "It went through a design process where I started production many months ago."

According to Gibbs, the process started with a drawing of the Eye given to him by the design team. However, over the course of script revisions, the Eye's design underwent a total makeover.

"The eye went through a transition state, because it went from something that was quite a simple operation to a design that needed other, greater thought put into it," he said. "As the script developed, it dictated that it needed more requirements."

The end result: an Eye of Agamotto that looked totally different from the initial drawings.

While movie fans will only see one Eye of Agamotto in the movie, Gibbs and his team actually made multiple versions of amulets for different purposes. A "master" version of the eye was hand crafted out of bronze and brass, as 3D printing made the Eye look too "fat". There were also versions of the eye made out of resin to use during stunt scenes. Finally, there was a version of the Eye that "opens up", which required input from the visual effects department to make sure it worked with various CGI effects.

Most importantly, the Eye of Agamotto also had to work in concert with the Cloak of Levitation, which was designed by Alexandra Byrne, the primary costume designer for Doctor Strange. Byrne designed the cord for the Eye long before Gibbs had finished designing the eye. A critical part of designing the amulet was making sure it fit with Byrne's costume design.

Doctor Strange will come out on November 4th in the US.
