The Walking Dead Power Rankings: Week 1
WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead For The Walking Dead Season Seven! We're one week into the newest [...]
10 - Eugene (Last Week: 9)
After Abraham's death, Eugene seems totally lost. He may not be as devastated as Rosita, but he did lose his rock on the series.
He may be completely torn apart by this tragedy, but Eugene still has a bit going for him.
Let's not forget, Eugene has figured out how to manufacture ammunition.
If the group goes to war with Negan in the near future, Eugene will be a huge asset. Negan doesn't have a way of getting any more ammo, so this will help give Rick and the group and advantage.
Eugene could also help the group by just making bullets for Negan himself. If Rick is having trouble gathering resources for one of Negan's collections, they could turn over a box of ammo and please the landlord.
While it may seem like Eugene is totally lost, he does have a silver lining waiting in his future.
prevnext9 - Morgan (Last Week: 3)
It's tough to place Morgan on this list, because we're not exactly sure what he's up to. We will get a great look at his situation next week, but there isn't enough information at the moment to place him any higher.
What Morgan does have going for him, however, is a sound state of mind.
Morgan displayed incredible amounts of peace and patience last season, showing that he has become an agent of peace. The season six finale saw him break that moral code for a moment, but he seems to have just enough edge to make an impact on the series.
Morgan is also somewhere safe, and that's important going forward.
Rick and the others have just been moritfied by Negan, and they are all in a place of desperate brokenness, but Morgan was spared that terror. He is in The Kingdom with Carol, and he doesn't have to worry about what Negan will bring. Well, not yet.
prevnext8 - Rick (Last Week: 5)
Rick has always been the most powerful character on The Walking Dead, no matter who showed up. He had the upper hand against The Governor, he out-smarted the folks at Terminus, and no amount of walkers could break his spirit.
Negan, however, is a different story.
After the events of the season seven premiere, Rick has been completely broken. Like a wild horse to an expert ranch hand, Rick is now under Negan's complete control.
After losign two of his closest friends, Rick is now operating completely out of fear. Instead of letting his strategic mindset guide him, Rick will make all of his choices based on his fear of what Negan will do.
Never count out Rick Grimes, but don't rely on him too heavily in the near future. He will rise up against Negan, but it will take a lot of time, and a lot of mental adjusting.
prevnext7 - Carl (Last Week: NR)
Out of the entire line-up, Carl seemed to handle Negan's brutality better than anyone. One could argue that his adolescence kept him from understanding the true gravity of the situation, but that just isn't the case.
Carl has experience well beyond his years, and there isn't much that coud scar him at this point.
If anything, Carl has seen enough to keep him from getting wounded easily. He's also gotten a bit crazy over the last could of years, and that only adds to his power going forward.
Carl's two biggest strengths at this point are his unpredicatbility, and his spot at Rick's ear. With Abraham and Glenn out of the picture, Carl will likely become a key advisor to Rick.
prevnext6 - Gregory (Last Week: 7)
Gregory wasn't seen in the season premiere, but he hasn't gone anywhere. He leads the Hilltop colony, and that helps to put him in a place of leverage with Negan, as well as Rick.
We know that Gregory is under Negan's thumb as well, but he has found a way to obey while still keeping a civilized colony. This understanding will be highly influential to Rick in the coming weeks.
Gregory's stability will also be a point of safe haven for Rick and his group going forward. Since they are so devastated by Negan's actions, they will need a place where they can feel comforted. Hilltop can provide that.
While Gregory does have power and pull in this world, he's also a total coward. He refuses to stand for anything, and this will lead to his demise down the road.
prevnext5 - Sasha (Last Week: 10)
While Carl handled the Negan situation well during the attack, it was Sasha who rose from the ashes when it was all over.
You would think that losing the man you love would cripple you, but Sasha took Abraham's death as a way to motivate her going forward. She announced that she would get Maggie to Hilltop, finishing Abe's mission.
Where Sasha really showed her power was in her conversation with Rosita. The two didn't get along due to their mutual love for Abraham, but Sasha put that aside right away, and took to comforting a friend.
Not one member of the group is okay after what Negan has done, but Sasha seems to be the strongest of the bunch. She was an incredible warrior before this episode, and she is using tragedy to propel her into even further greatness.
Watch out Walking Dead fans, Sasha is coming.
prevnext4 - Jesus (Last Week: 4)
Jesus was MIA this week, but we can't ignore the fact that he's one of the deadliest characters on the show. Not only is he lethal in hand-to-hand combat, but Jesus is a master in the art of stealth.
These skills will come in handy as the communities begin to rally against Negan and Jesus will become an integral part of the war. He can keep up with any of Negan's best men, and not one is better suited to sneak into The Sanctuary.
Another quality that helps Jesus going forward his ability to gain other people's respect.
No one that has encountered Jesus has had a problem with him, and his way with words helps him make more friends than enemies. When you think about it, it wasn't just his looks that earned Jesus his nickname.
prevnext3 - Dwight (Last Week: 4)
Dwight has the ear of Negan, and it's clear he isn't messing around. As soon as Daryl acted up in the premiere, Dwight was there with a corssbow at his head.
While Simon is the right hand of Negan, it seems like Dwight acts as the enforcer of the group. When a dirty deed needs to be done, it's Dwight that handles it. When things turn violent, Dwight is the first to respond.
If you remember from last season, when Dwight first appeared, he didn't seem to be a big fan of Negan. He was running away from his leader when he met up with Daryl. If this attitude is still true, to any extent, Dwight is one of the most powerful players in the game.
It's clear that Negan trusts Dwight, as he seems loyal on the surface. However, if Dwight were to ever decide Negan wasn't fit to lead, he has a great position to de-throne the king.
Dwight is definitely a character to keep your eye on in the future.
prevnext2 - Simon (Last Week: NR)
According to Negan, Simon is his right hand man. While everyone had thought Dwight held that role, Simon is clearly Negan's most trusted advisor.
This fact puts Simon just shy of the show's driver's seat going forward. While Negan is in complete control of the colonies, Simon is riding his coat tails into battle.
Being the hand of the king gives you an insane amount of power, but it also puts a giant target on your back. This is Simon's major weakness.
If Rick, or anyone else, decides to try and go after Negan, killing Simon would be a great first step. This would also provide excellent pay-back for the slaying of Glenn and Abraham.
prevnext1 - Negan (Last Week: 1)
Negan is the king, and there is no denying it.
After this episode, you could argue that there has never been a more terrifying villain in television history. Negan killed beloved characters with a smile on his face, and proceeded to rub his victory in the faces of the bereaved.
In the process of breaking Rick, Negan showed that he is as dangerous psychologically as he is strategically. No one can match Negan's power, and it doesn't look like anyone will try any time soon.
What would it take to knock Negan out of power? Whatever it is, it will certainly take a long time. Look for Negan to keep this throne for weeks to come, if not this entire season.
