As fans debate over the Assassin's Creed movie and its relevance to the video game movie genre as a whole, we're about to get a real serious reminder of just how far things have come, when the Super Mario Bros. movie is released on Blu-ray and in a limited edition steelbook, early next year.

Silicon Era dropped details about he Super Mario Bros. limited edition. The movie will be available on Blu-ray starting February 13, 2017 - but if hardcore fans(?) of the film want to put their bid in early, they can preorder the steelbook version from a UK retailer, Zavvi.

Super Mario Bros Limited Edition Blu-ray

For those who never knew, never saw, don't remember or blocked out the memory: the Super Mario Bros. movie came out in 1993 at the height of the game's popularity. It had quality actors like the late Bob Hoskins (Roger Rabbit) as Mario; John Leguizamo (John Wick: Chapter 2) as Luigi; and the late Dennis Hopper (Speed) King Koopa. Other than the cast, the movie was a baffling mess that had almost nothing to do (visually or aesthetically) with the games.

It's hard to know why anyone would want to shell out for a limited edition of the movie, but for those that do, here's what you'll get (via Silicon Era):

"In addition to the movie, the Blu-ray will include a documentary featuring the film's production team, including co-directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, producer Roland Joffe, and actors John Leguizamo and Richard Edson, as well as archived interviews with Bob Hoskins and producer Jake Eberts. Bonus features also include an original electronic press kit and behind the scenes/storyboard galleries."

Super Mario Bros. limited edition steelbook Blu-ray will be available on February 13, 2017.
