After upcoming film Song to Song and the highly successful La La Land, Ryan Gosling might be done with making musicals for a bit. Maybe that’s why he’s diving into the world of comic book adaptations.
The critically acclaimed graphic novel from Top Shelf heralded Lemire as a comics auteur before he cemented his status as a star, since having successful runs on Justice League United, Old Man Logan, and Bloodshot: Reborn.
Top Shelf editor-in-chief Chris Staros and parent company IDW’s publisher Ted Adams will serve as executive producers.
The film is about a man with the dangerous profession depicted in the title. One day while he’s underwater repairing a broken oil rig, he is confronted by a supernatural entity who may or may not be his father.
The interaction causes the man to question his sanity and revisit older memories. Already struggling at home with his pregnant wife, the main character seems doomed to repeat mistakes his father made when the events cause him to confront harsh truths about who he is and who his father was.
Look for more news about the Underwater Welder in the future as more production details begin to trickle out.
