Alien: Covenant arrives in theaters this summer, bringing sci-fi and horror fans back to director Ridley Scott's vision of alien encounter turned nightmare. The film occupies a somewhat pivotal place in the franchise; as the sequel to Prometheus and prequel to the original Alien film, Covenant is essentially responsible with bridging a wide gap of continuity that has Scott has failed to fill in.
One would think, then, that after all the corrective work that Alien: Covenant will do, Ridley Scott would be content to just retire from the franchise, job done. However, according to Ridley Scott himself, the Alien franchise is far from done.
Speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald (via Yahoo Movies), Scott said that there's not going to be an end to the Alien franchise in the foreseeable future, as working on Prometheus and Covenant has rekindled his passion for Alien. "If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six. I'm not going to close it down again. No way."
For those who may want to look at that statement and say it's just wishful thinking (as in, what could happen if Covenant does well), then you may want to read on, as Scott, apparently, has already begun work on the next chapter - while assuming that Covenant will do well enough to warrant another chapter: "You've got to assume to a certain extent success and from that you'd better be ready. You don't want a two-year gap. So I'll be ready to go again next year."
No word on what the next chapters fo the saga would entail: more sequels in the Alien prequel line, or actual sequels set after the events of Aliens. And if Scott is planning so many additional sequels, where does that leave director Neil Blomkamp's plan for Alien 5?
Time will soon tell - and it will probably depend on fans' reaction to Alien: Covenant. So how excited are you for the film? Let us know by voting in our anticipation ranking below!
